My cat's litter used to be upstairs on the main floor as well as in the basement where I live. He used to go upstairs and downstairs all the time, sleep in the basement and use these two litters. Five months after we got the cat, we got a puppy. Puppy was getting into litter so we removed the one from the main floor and left only one in the basement.
The litter was smelling the entire basement and the cat loved to dig and play and the dust was going everywhere. Therefore, I recently bought a full covered litter pan with a see through flap door.
Not sure if that turned the cat off, but today I caught him squatting and peeing on the sofa. BTW - we have a leather sofa on the main floor. The cat and dog play and chase all the time and it was damaging the sofa so we place sheets and covers on the entire sofa.
I first noticed the cat trying to find a comfy spot to pee. When I removed the sheet, he peed on the sofa directly.
What do I do? How do I train a cat??
Take the cover off the box - you've done two things that cats do not like. One, you got rid of one of his litter boxes. And two, you got a covered box. Many cats hate them - and refuse to use them - as it keeps the smell inside and is really offensive to them. Think of a port-a-john in the middle of summer heat - would you use something that smelled that bad? Neither will a lot of cats. Cats are extremely clean animals, and are as offended by a dirty box as you are an unflushed toilet. His box needs to be uncovered, and scooped more often, especially if you aren't going to add back a second box. It's not an issue of training - it's an issue of providing what *he* feels is an acceptable box.
