What is your favorite Jazz/Vocal/Big Band/Crooner songs?
I'm talking about Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Nat King Cole, Charlie Parker, Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong classics.
If it's new or old... what are your favorites?
Songs are written, they come and go, fall in and out of fashion. Whether a song is good is all according to who is performing it. An example of this is a song that does not look like much on paper, but when sung by this one particularly fantastic singer, just takes on a life of its' own. The song I am referring to is a tune titled "...Baby Don't Quit Now" or some such, as recently recorded and currently being performed by Annie Sellick. The song is good, but I want to talk about Annie.
I am 60 years old, been a devotee of various cool types of music for years, and the HANDS DOWN best I have seen, both recorded and in person is this chick singer from Nashville named Annie Sellick. She has a website, has a few albums out, one as principal vocalist with the Nashville Jazz Orchestra cut live at B.B. King's in NVL.....what's this with Big Band Jazz music and the South??
Lou Marini, Jr. (Blue Lou) cut a great Big Band album, "Lou's Blues", in Birmingham, Alabama...while he was living in NYC working as a session player.
Wonder why???
I'm saying, just becauses Annie lives and makes her music in Nashville does not mean she should be discriminated against or discounted. There is quite a music scene in the South beyond the Nashville Country sound; for example, the blue-eyed soul of the Muscle Shoals area in Alabama...
So, check out Annie Sellick, "Baby Don't Quit Now", and make yourself happy!!
