I was eating some hard candy a couple days ago and my tooth broke. I went to the dentist and she said i need a root canal..what is it?
A root canal is when the dentist removes the root (pulp) from the tooth, thereby removing the nerve as well. It will be considered a "dead" tooth, but not dead as in needing to be removed. The tooth itself will remain and be filled. Commonly they are crowned (capped) as well. It will take a few appointments to complete the root canal. They are done under local anesthetic (novocaine) and not uncomfortable. Small barbed wires are used to remove the pulp from the tooth. Root canals are an alternative to removing a tooth when it is broken, severely decayed, and needs or has lost a large filling.
