Is there any universal justice? (read fully)?
I think one of the reasons many people stick with religion even if they're at the point of severely questioning it is because there's this nagging feeling that there has to be some kind of justice.
But, when we look at life, there really are people who do terrible things and screw other people over in order to become very rich and they get away with it completely. For some people, they will never have any punishment and they know this and laugh all the way to the grave.
I think one of the hardest parts of taking the leap to atheism is coming to terms with that. It's not a fun thing to realize, but it's life.
And no, we atheists generally don't have the desire to be like that ourselves, so don't try to go there.
Yes. BUT...on the other hand - it gives us the impetus to DO something about these injustices.
If we sit around and think "oh well, he'll get his in the afterlife" - that's easy. It worked to keep people "in their place" for eons. It kept the slaves silent and stopped the lower classes from doing something about their condition. "Blessed are the meek" they would say.
Now that we know this is in our hands and we only have *now* to make things right, we have the reason to make the world as fair as possible in our lifetimes.
