What are some of the greatest recordings of these works?
These are all pieces I'm still missing, and I'm buying them on Amazon now. What are some of your favorite recordings of these? If you only have recommendations for a few I'd still love to hear them.
Brahms piano quintet
Dvorak symphonies (esp. the fifth and seventh)
Dvorak symphonic poems
Saint-Saens cello concerto
Beethoven violin sonatas (esp. 7-10)
Schubert masses 2 and 5
Schumann fantasia
I'm getting a little sick of having to use Naxos every time!
Nothing wrong with having to use Naxos! Their recordings of The Brahms Piano Quintet is pretty good. So far as the Dvorak Symphonies are concerned, Naxos is due to release at some time, no idea when, a recording of the 7th conducted by Marin Alsop as a follow up to her magnificent 9th. There aren't that many recordings, in fact of the work but that on Pentatone - Netherlands Philharmonic - Yakov Kreizberg (who he?) has received at least one 'best buy' (PTC5186082) It comes coupled with the Golden Spinning Wheel. There are similarly few recordings of the 5th. You could try Neeme Jarvi and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra on Chandos (CHAN8552) which comes coupled with the Water Goblin
For the complete Symphonic Poems the field narrows even more - Jarvi seems to be the best bet, again on Chandos ( CHAN241-3), although there is a one disc of the four 'big' ones with the Concertgebouw under Harnoncourt which has a Penguin Guide Rosette (Warner Classics 2564602212)
For the Saint-Saens, you are going to be looking at couplings. Rostropovich's recording is in EMI's Great Recordings on the Century series ( 5675932) coupled with the Dvorak (LPO/Giulini)
For the Beethoven, sonatas 7-10 come on a low price HMV double album - Zukerman/Barenboim - coupled with the Tchaikovsky Trio ( 3652242)
For the Schubert Masses, my benchmark has always been the Swallisch recordings - he recorded the complete Schubert religious music for EMI with Bavarian forces and some notable soloists including Dietrich F-D. The latest incarnation is in budget box of 7 CDs including all the masses (and the Deutsche Messe), LLazarusand ssomesmaller works. Recordings of the Schumann seem as rare as hen's teeth. The best I can find is on Preiser with Till Martin and Martin Walch (http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product//PR90565.htm)
