Designing a world setting for a novel, need some climate information?
I am designing an Earth style world for a novel, and the climate on one continent the story will be set in I thought could have progressive areas. What is the natural progression of areas of climate? For instance could I go from South to North
You go through desert lands in the southern part of the continent,
then rainforests,
then savannahs or grasslands and farmlands,
then temperate forests and a few swamps etc.,
then foothills,
then mountains and pine forests,
then subarctic flatlands,
then arctic.
Or is this too strict? I can't tell any pattern across the board for climate in RL, I mean you have the Gobi Desert and parts of deserts almost to the edge of Tibet that are right next to huge cold mountain ranges....
Any light on any patterns on what is realistic?
You're already more realistic than most science fiction worlds, so bravo. Try reading the Wikipedia references on Hadley circulation and monsoon. Those and a realization that deserts are downwind from mountains will give you the major climate determinants. Terrain height is almost totally determined by plate tectonics, not latitude.
