Great fighters beat great fighters right?
SUGAR RAY LEONARD BEAT THOMAS HEARNS, ROBERTO DURAN, MARVIN HAGLER Who has Manny beat that we could say puts him in this rare air. Manny beat Cotto,Ricky Hatton, and Clottey my question is how do these names on your resume make you one of the best ever are you kidding me?
To start with you might want to look further back than his last 3 opponents. 2nd, of those opponents you named Cotto was a top welterweight titleholder, Hatton was the man at 140, and Clottey was a top 5 welterweight (behind Pac, Mosley, Berto, Cotto). I won't compare Cotto, Hatton, or Clottey to Duran, Hearns, and Hagler, but they were some of the top fighters available at the time. Also, Pacquiao has moved up in weight, and we're not just talking about a weightclass or two.
If using Leonard as a comparison...
Leonard was part of the Fab 4, consisting of himself, Hagler, Hearns, and Duran. Leonard was the only one of the three able to defeat the other 3. Manny, and any other current fighter, has not had a foursome consisting of all time great fighters like that. What Manny did have was his time's version of the Fab 4-himself, Morales, Barrera, and Marquez (all future Hall of Fame locks). Like Leonard, Manny was the only one in the group able to defeat the other 3. Now it's fair to say that one of, if not both, of the Marquez victories are questionable. It is also fair to say that Leonard's victory of Hagler and his draw with Hearns in the 2nd fight were just as questionable. Keep in mind also that Pacquiao is a much more complete and better all around fighter now than he was when he fought those 3.
I'm not saying that Pacquiao is better than Leonard, but he has definitely earned his place among the elite in boxing history.
2 questions to think about:
-Other than the 3 obvious names of Hearns, Hagler, Duran, who else did Leonard beat?
-Of the top fighters in the weightclasses Pacquiao settled at over his career, who did he NOT fight? (Mayweather and Mosley fight likely pending)
