How long does it take to travel from Rome to Pompeii?
I'll be traveling to Rome for Christmas and I'd like to spend a day in another city/town, but I can't decide on one. Is Pompeii really worth a visit, and if so can I just spend a day there? Would it be better if I traveled to Florence?

Rome to Naples on the high speed train is an hour and a half. By regular fast train it is two hours. From there you must catch the commuter train to Pompeii. This is about a half hour ride. This commuter train comes every half hour so you could end up waiting a half hour if you "just miss" the last one out of the station. So, realistically, your trip can take just over two hours (if you are able to get right onto the commuter train) or up to three hours ( if you have to wait a half hour for the commuter train). Once you get to the Pompeii scavi stop it is about a 5 minute walk to the entrance of the ruins. This is an all day trip and you will be tired at the end of the day. Leave early and return late. It is well worth the trip and not to be missed. You won't have to spend the night in Naples but try to leave the site by about 5 or 6.
Florence is about an hour and a half away from Rome also. It is a nice day trip to make but I would prefer to go to Pompeii.
