Why do so many People think that Popular Blues musicians Like James Cotton Are Rich?
Believe it or not 90% of the well know Blues musicians are Lucky if they Make over 60 thousand a year
Most of our income comes from the Blues fest we preform at ,,
which is seasonal, once the summer is over the tours stop ,
and most go back to playing at small bars and clubs
I am more fortunate then that because I have had a few of my songs recorded by popular rock and country musicians
and my music can be easily classified as Heavy Metal .
When people down load music files it really hits a lot of these Blues musicians ,their Cd's help the flow of income coming in during slow times ,, Professor Louie said to me .
" that I am Lucky if I makes 50thousand a year and the would have been better off, If I was a semi popular rock musician."
And if some of these Blues musicians did cross over, or sold some of their songs, to rock musicians ,,,People would call them sell outs,
Because in the mass media age for so many people an artist's "face time"= prosperity: if you are getting "smacked up" in the media, you must be successful and therefore wealthy. Thanks for sharing the reality behind the illusion, but for many people $60K annually is rich- but these folks don't realize just what a price these artists pay (especially wear and tear on your body when touring, whether stateside or abroad) for the money.
I'm reminded of the bromide that is the title of an Erma Bombeck book: "The grass is always greenest over the septic tank".
