Isn't five years old WAY to young to be jumping 3'9?
I am looking at horses for sale and there is an Oldenburg gelding that is already jumping 3'9 courses at only five years old! Doesn't that seem REALLY young to you or am I crazy?
Well not really no, at 5 is when most horses will begin competing, most shows are aged from 5 and up and you can compete in the riding club on 5 year olds, the jumps are a lot bigger than a foot. Starter stakes are usually 70cm.
Provided the horse isn't run into the ground, jumping at that height occasionally is fine, remember barrel racing can be just as strenuous on a young horses joints.
A young horse should NEVER be overworked, I think sometimes people cannot tell the difference between light work and breaking a horse down from pushing it too far.
Fox hunter is right, most horses in Europe begin jumping at 4 and yes often young horses are hunted. Though most young horses now are introduced to jumping through training shows specifically for four year olds, no younger.
This kind of question always causes arguments.
